The P6004 is a special configuration of the six-digit P6000 microprocessor-based rate meter and counter with an isolated analog-to-frequency signal conditioner. The result is a 1/8 DIN software-scalable process meter or integrating totalizer with an exceptionally wide display range, two setpoints and RS-232. Standard input ranges are 4-20 mA, 0-10 V or 0-2 V, with fine zero and span input adjustments at the rear of the meter.

PROCESS INDICATOR MODE
The analog-to-frequency signal conditioner converts the analog process signal to a frequency from 1 Hz to 10 kHz. In the process indicator mode, this frequency is scaled to engineering units (such as PSI or liters/s) by a six-digit multiplier or divider with any decimal point. An exceptionally wide six digits of zero offset are also available. For instance, this offset can allow the P6004 to display the water level of a canal to 0.1 inch resolution at 1,000 feet above sea level, based on 4-20 mA signal from a pressure transducer at the bottom of the canal and the known altitude of the canal.

The display update time can be programmed in 10 ms steps from 50 ms plus one pulse period to 99.99 s. The longer update times provide improved noise rejection by time-averaging the signal.

In the process indicator mode, the accuracy of the P6004 is 99.9% at 25°C, as for most 3 1/2 digit meters with dual-slope integration. The temperature coefficient is a low 50 ppm/°C. The number of digits to the right of the decimal point is program-selectable with true roundoff so as to eliminate non-significant digits.

INTEGRATING TOTALIZER MODE
In the totalizer mode, the 1 Hz to 10 kHz output from the analog-to-frequency signal conditioner is totalized, then scaled to engineering units by a six-digit multiplier or divider with any decimal point. For instance, this allows the P6004 to accept the 4-20 mA signal from a linear flowmeter and display volume in liters or gallons, or to accept the 0-10 V signal from a wattmeter and display kW-hrs.

Six digits of preset (display offset) are available, and the P6004 may count up from zero to this preset (positive multiplier or divider) or down from this preset to zero (negative multiplier or divider). In case of a power failure, the latest reading is automatically saved in non-volatile RAM and is restored with power. A low-level cutoff may be jumper-selected to disable totalizing below 0.27% of maximum signal.

SIMULTANEOUS RATE AND TOTAL
Rate and total can be displayed simultaneously and can each have their own HI and LO setpoints if a basic P6000 is used in combination with a P6004. This is achieved by bringing out the TTL-level 1 Hz to 10 kHz pulses from the analog-to-frequency signal conditioner of the P6004 and using them as input to the basic P6000.

LOCAL OR REMOTE PROGRAMMING
1. FRONT-PANEL PROGRAMMING
The P6004 can be programmed manually at the front panel, which provides five programming keys and alphanumeric prompting through the LED display. If desired, all setup parameters can be stored in non-volatile RAM. To prevent unauthorized or inadvertent program changes, the P6004 provides four levels of front-panel lockout using push-on jumpers. The front panel can be locked out completely, be locked out except for setpoints, or be fully usable except for fine-calibration of the crystal clock. Saving program changes in non-volatile RAM can also be locked out, so that previously stored setup parameters can always be recalled.

Once the program is stored in non-volatile RAM, an optional front panel without keys can be substituted for the standard front panel with keys.

The P6004 can also be programmed remotely by down-loading setup parameters from a host computer via RS-232 using direct wiring or a modem. It is well suited for ATE and other computer-controlled applications, since the host computer or programmable controller can dynamically change all setup parameters, including setpoints, and receive data via RS-232. To aid in programming, an IBM PC compatible 5i1/4 inch floppy disk with a menu-driven setup program is available as a low-cost option.

DATA, ALARM AND CONTROL OUTPUTS
RS-232 and 20 mA serial ASCII communications are standard on the main board, as are three open-collector outputs rated 30 V, 150 mA. The P6004 also offers a choice of three upper-board options:

Isolated parallel BCD output allows the P6004 to be interfaced to programmable controllers and to Newport's Model 820A printer. The combination of a P6004 with an 820A constitutes a low-cost datalogging system, where the readings are tagged with time and date.

Dual 8 A Form C relays allow the P6004 to switch resistive loads up to 2 kW for alarm and control applications.

Isolated analog output provides jumper selection of 0-10 V or 4-20 mA and adjustable zero and span. The 0-10 V output is ideal to drive a stripchart recorder. The 4-20 mA output effectively turns the P6004 into an isolated transmitter.
